The Last Caroni - 1996 Velier 23 Year Old

The Last Caroni

The Caroni distillery, founded in 1918 and in 1937 taken over by Tate & Lyle (British sugar giant),  was once a major supplier of high-proof rum to the British Navy. In the 1970s the Trinidad Government purchased Caroni. After years of decline in the sugar industry, Caroni was closed in 2003. Angostura and Velier acquired much of the remaining stock, with Luca Gargano of Velier playing a key role. Gargano launched the first Caroni bottlings in 2005 and made a significant impact on the rum landscape. Velier's 39th and final release, "The Last Caroni", is a blend of 24 heavy rums that matured in Trinidad until 2008 and in Guyana until bottling in 2019. This rum, part of an iconic series, indicates that it was bottled directly from oak casks in a tropical climate.
As it was matured completely in the Caribic, this rum has an Angels' share of more than 85%.

Luca Gargano is highly regarded for his expertise in rum and his commitment to promoting and preserving traditional rum production methods. He has played a key role in introducing enthusiasts to unique and authentic expressions of rum, often sourced from historic and lesser-known distilleries.
